This proved to be an evenly match contest and circumstances allowed us to play 6 a side match with each half lasting 20 minutes each. This was a big ask of the lads as we had no substitutes and Mellor did. As ever the lads played with determination and held out and countered the early Mellor attacks. It was played at a fast pace and Darwen Rangers took the lead after a great corner was swung in by Elliot Whalley and was tapped in at the near post by Harry Bennett-Courland. Great defensive work by Joshua Scruton and Anthony Scott with Joe Smith helping out ensured there was no way through for Mellor. Great goalkeeping and good command of his box by Thomas Collins also meant the Mellor forwards were kept at bay. Unfortunately just as half-time was approaching Mellor caught us out with two quick goals and went in at half-time 2-1 which was a touch harsh.
The second half started as the first half but with Darwen Rangers getting two quick goals to make the score line 3-2 in what was turning into a very exciting game despite the strong gusts of wind. It continued to be a tight game with chances limited. Inevitably Darwen Rangers began to tire and they conceded a few goals to make it 2-5 as keeping up with the fresher Mellor team was proving a hard task. Not ones to lie down Darwen Rangers kept going and some good work between Harry Bennett-Courland and Elliot Whalley made it 4-5 with Elliot completing a hat-trick. Despite the pressure Darwen Rangers just couldn’t get an equaliser. An all round great performance by the lads despite being asked to play 40 minutes. The progress can also be seen being made by the side as last time they met Mellor Juniors Darwen Rangers lost 11-2.
The goal scorer was follows: Elliot Whalley x 3 and Harry Bennett-Courland 1.
