| Notes: |
After a disappointing end to the first game where we dropped two points in the last couple of minutes, we travelled over to British Aerospace to face the league and LFA cup winners from last year and again the team that will be our main rivals this year. This time we had the benefit of three extra players as their registrations came through from the league (thanks to Neil Calville for acting so quickly here to sort this for us).

No surprise but rain was falling heavily as we travelled over to Preston, but the pitch was in excellent condition and made for good football. We kicked off the first half against the elements but still held our own in early exchanges. With around 20 mins gone no clear cut chances had been created but then a good ball in from the right from Bryn Hargreaves found Matt Fay in a bit of space and he turned and beat the keeper from 8 yards out to put us 1-0 up. We were playing very solidly and Walton only looked like doing something from a few corners they forced towards the end of the half but they failed to take any half chances that fell their way.
H-t 0-1
We knew they would look to come at us in the second half, but to be honest it was still very even and we were creating as many chances as them, with not many falling either way. With around 15 mins gone of the second half Fay put pressure on their right back by the corner flag, beat him and ran on into the box only to be brought down from behind. Lee Hargreaves stepped up to put the penalty away to put us 2 up. A great header from Mitchell Smith was then brilliantly tipped over by their keeper to keep them in the game. With around 15mins to go Walton got a lifeline with a free kick from their right being headed in without challenge from any of our players. They then pushed more forwards on but we stood firm and to be honest created more clear cut chances with the only real scare for us being a volley put in the net but Rob had the flag up for offside to ensure this did not count….the correct decision as confirmed by Walton supporters on the line behind me by the way.
So we went over to British Aerospace and took all three points from our big rivals in their own back yard! This was a superb display asked to play 4-5-1 with Jon Entwistle in the holding role in midfield and Mitchell Smith as our sole striker, all the lads did their jobs without exception, also they gained superb support from the subs on the sidelines, players that will be needed as the season progresses if we are to have success.
This result perhaps equals the cup win last year…..proud of every player and supporter as there was a bit of animosity after the game from one or two individuals thankfully not involved with our club and we did not rise to the bait.
I had 14 stars tonight but I give MOM to Mitchell Smith who never stopped running all night and always looked to put pressure on every one of their defenders which is exactly what I asked of him.
LFA Cup on Sunday and having beat last year’s winners why can we not go on another good run in this competition?
