Goals-matt gillett (2) Well once again the football season is underway-with the lads now having to pit their wits against the best the east lancs league has to offer-todays opponents were haslingden juniors. The lads started superbly and matched haslingden throughout the first half-after tommo hit the bar midway through the first half we took the lead after some great work in midfield freed bailz who ran on,had a shot which hit the post, came out back to him,he then found space and squared to matt-0-1. This was just what we deserved-the whole team battled hard against a very strong, physical haslingden side, but as the half drew to a close, haslingden started to pile on the pressure and drew level thanks to a penalty on the stroke of half time. This didn't concern me as although haslingden had got back in it,i felt we were capable of getting something out the game. What did concern me however was the amount of bright red faces at half time-the brightest of which were all wearing under armour-now i stand to be corrected here but are these garments not designed to keep you warm when its cold-which means they'll make you roasting when its hot and sap all your energy-surely there is no need to wear these on a sunny day! Within seconds of the re-start we were behind-haslingden cut through us like a knife through butter and this pattern continued throughout the second half-it really was chalk 'n' cheese-it was though at half time haslingden had drunk a pint of lucozade each and we'd all had a cup of ovaltine. In the end haslingden won the game at a canter and gave us a harsh introduction to life in the red league. But despite the poor second half-there was positives to be taken out of the game-there really was nothing between the teams during the first half-the lads were showing what was required to survive in this league, but because of the physical nature of the first half and having no subs available to freshen things up gave haslingden something to build on and take control during the second half. The lads now know what lies ahead for us this season-it will be a grueller-but this is no bad thing as the lads will learn a lot from playing against these better sides. always remember.... "the futures bright, the futures blue!" (Jason Wallace) |
