19/07/2010 - Under 11 Lads in Lostock Hall tournament

(report by manager Ian Foulds)

This was the first time we had entered this tournament and were up against teams from all over the north west. A total of 24 teams had entered and were put into four groups of six teams, with the top two qualifying for the quater-finals.In our 1st game we played Eccleston and despite having most of the play it finished 0-0. Next up were Lostock Hall  who we beat 1-0 with a goal from Ross Taylor,we then played Old Skem boys and again drew 0-0.As each game was played we got better  and Pirates blue were beaten 5-0 in our next match. Two goals apiece for Thomas Yates and Paul Hartland with Ross Taylor also on the scoresheet. We had to draw our last group game to be sure of going through and Barrowford Celtic were the opponents. We attacked from the first whistle and ran out worthy winners 3-2. Ross scored again and goals by Harry Foulds and new signing Kameran Akhtar saw us qualify and win the group. In the quarter finals we came up against a very strong side from AFC Liverpool. This was to be a very hard fought game but the lads were on a roll and confidence was high.Yatesy scored yet again to put us in the lead but Liverpool pressed us hard and scored with virtually the last kick of the match. Three minutes of extra time couldn't separate the teams and so we went to penalties.Winning the toss we decided to go 1st and scored some fantastic pens to win the shootout 4-3. This put us into the semi-finals were we played Southport Trinity, sadly we ran out of steam and lost a very close game 1-0.
Every one should be very proud of the way they played today they were a credit to themselves, their parents and Darwen Rangers. Well done lads for a fantastic days footie.

28/06/2010 - Under 12 Girls in AGSA tournament - report from 27 June

(by Neill Caville)

SQUAD

Charlotte Rippingale, Leah Smith, Paige Smith, Leah Tierney, Megan McKirdy, Macey Mulligan

This was a mini tournament against AGSA, Gt Harwood, Bispham Wrens and Fulford Girls (from York)

First game saw us against Fulford and in a close match Darwen created several good chances but could not find a finish. A strong Fulford team kept pressing and eventually scored in the very last minute.

Score 0 – 1

We then came up against AGSA and we dominated this game for long periods eventually running out 2 – 0 winners with both goals coming from Leah Tierney.

Next up Gt Harwood who ran out 2 – 0 winners, but we had 6 girls to their 7. This season Gt Harwood have beaten us 9 – 0 and 8 – 0 so this was a great result for us.

Finally Bispham beat us 2 – 0 , but again this was a very close match.

In the 3rd & 4th play off Fulford beat us 2 – 0.

Bispham won the competition beating Gt Harwood 2 – 1 in the final.

All the girls got a medal and Leah Tierney was named Darwen Player of the Tournament by the opposition managers.

At the end of a season where we have been slaughtered in most matches this was a greatly improved performance and bodes well for next season.

Our thanks go to Martin from Fulford and Mike from AGSA for organising a great days football.
